……..And during this phase of the test, remember that not only was the Pre-Amp now coupled with big bucks 300b SE amps, but also driving my main speakers -Loth-x Loth-x Polaris - and REL sub, a combination that only a madman would drive with a $400 pre-amp. This is a full-range system (down to 16 Hz) and any problems in any area are ruthlessly exposed. The Pre-Amp, even with the T20, drove them beautifully and left me with the feeling that such a ludicrous pairing was actually 100% sonically viable, and more to the point something that I could happily live with - not the case with the T20 on its own in that system…………….

Why battery power
Is battery power truly the cult image worthy of worship? Or is it just a golden calf in the absence of a better idol? That happens to be easy to tackle since KingRex has already done the preaching here. Of the three most common types of power supplies for audio amplification, a switched-mode power supply (SMPS) is the most convenient but susceptible to high-frequency switching noise and distortion. In conclusion for our sidebar to David's upcoming feature review, we have to say that for the asking price, the T20U/SLAP combination at $749 is a bargain for its quality - well built, good sounding and with room for tweaked improvements if you run the T20U/SLAP on extremely revealing, ultra-expensive, super efficient speakers like our Avantgarde Duo Omegas.

Design consideration for the KingRex SLAP - The slightest demand, the greatest satisfaction
After introduction of the T20 series audio amplifier to the public, KingRex sought the next evolutionary step in sonic excellence while preserving the existing value for our customers. Currently we provide two power supply solutions for our T 20 series amplifiers, a power adaptor(switching type) and a power supply unit – PSU (linear power type). We believe these two products match most audiophile demands because of their reasonable price and excellent quality but also they sound good. Nevertheless, to satisfy the highest level of audiophile expectation for low noise and distortion, we have developed a pure power source – the SLAP (Sealed Lead-Acid battery power supply unit)
What are the differences between switching power, linear power, and battery power?
All amplifiers need a continuous current supply during operation. If the demands of the amplifier exceed the capabilities of the power of the power supply during transient conditions deep bass passages then detail loss, smearing and distortion can occur. The three most common power sources: switching power adaptor, linear power supply, and battery power supply unit. The switching power adaptor is the most convenient and common power source however it is not a good selection for the music connoisseur who prefers sonic performance over convenience as it has the most noise and distribution due to the high-frequency switching and harmonics in its design.
The linear power supply is a better choice for audiophiles. It has less noise and distortion than the switching power adaptor, however, during the AC to DC conversion and rectification process, there is still minute amounts of unavoidable noise and distortion. That’s because the AC power is required to traverse significant circuitry such as transformer, diodes, voltage regulators, and other components.
To eliminate any potential for noise during the rectification and filtering process we have eliminated it (during operation) and created the SLAP.

Pure DC power is the best power source for the Hi End. However, it is really difficult to provide pure DC for high watt power amplifier as the huge capacitor (battery) size or large power capacity demanding.
The power voltage and current supply is very important for operating the power amp which could affect the sonic performance directly.
SLAP is designed with automatic monitoring by TI UC3906IC which is a SLA battery charger controller to provide the pure DC to the amp. It is using 3 stage charging management to prevent overcharging and this design could extend the life of SLA battery.

Being tiny, a near point-source and solidly made makes for great imagine and the JB3’s produced some expansive soundstages both in depth and width (in fact especially depth). The biggest surprise was the bass which was warm and bouncy, obviously a large part of this would be a little illusion from a port induced bass hump (circa 100Hz?) but nevertheless a very pleasing result was produced………..

Reviewing the T20 and PSU has been a great deal of fun, and a real ear-opener. For the price the performance really is better than it has any right to be- in fact I'm still using my samples! It's the proverbial giant-killer, deserve to sell well, and gets my highest thumbs up for sonic performance(providing the KinRex PSU is used). That its performance can also be upgraded at a later date by a few simple modifications only increases its value for money. I'd love to try two units in a 'bi-amping' configuration- I'm sure this would yield even greater levels of high fidelity. Ignore the relatively low price, and go into this with your ears open and I'm sure you'll come out smiling. It's the kind of component that clearly shows improvements & upgrades elsewhere in your system, providing your speakers are sensitive enough to show these improvements.

U for ubiquitous, U for unprecedented, U for unbelievable, U for USB. KingRex T20U is basically the same Tripath-based T20 integrated amp with an onboard USB interface and DAC. USB has plugged into our so-called modern living. Audio devices with USB interface are becoming commonplace. Weve seen tube amps and separate box DAC with USB input. But combining USB/DAC with Tripath amp is definitely unprecedented. It makes so much sense that one would ask what took you. The fact that T20U is priced at $245-a mere 25 bucks more than the T20- is absolutely unbelievable. ..
